EVERY Pure & Green Organics product is ACO Certified Organic; face, body, dental and hair care. No loopholes, no compromises! In June 2009 we became the first and only company in the world to achieve this.
Some important things we discovered about the cosmetics industry:
- Many companies call themselves 'certified organic' when in reality only 'some' of their products are certified organic; their remaining products fail certification.
- There is more than one certifying body you can approach to certify your product but only a select few have the high standards we all assume the words 'certified organic' stand for.
- Prior to June '09, not one cosmetics company in the world had succeeded in achieving real high-level certification for every product in a range including face, body, dental and hair care; they all made unhealthy compromises.
Real certification you can trust:
 Australian Certified Organic is the gold standard for real high-level cosmetics certification; there is no higher standard in Australia. Here are 3 examples:
- Real certification requires at least 95% of ingredients by mass be certified organic. Other certifiers accept as little as 20% or less.
- Real certification won’t allow use of synthetic vitamins (eg.
pro-vitamin B5) or synthetic surfactants (eg. coco glucoside, coco
betaine) while other Australian certifiers will allow these and other harmful synthetics.
- Real certifiers like ACO not only prohibit toxic solvents being
used as ingredients, they check if these toxins were used in the
extraction of any other ingredients. Other Australian certifiers do not check; a loophole for toxins to silently enter products which still get labelled 'certified organic'.
So next time you see a company or product range claiming to be
'certified organic', take a closer look and see if their claim is real.
Ask yourself:
- Are all the products certified, each one bearing the logo of a reputable certifier like ACO?
- Do they use synthetic ingredients?
(eg. vitamins, surfactants, proteins etc)
Rest assured:
 We are 100% cruelty free. Neither our products nor our ingredients have been tested on animals. Some companies still employ this cruel practice.
 We are 100% vegan. Using animal parts for products or packaging is cruel, unhealthy and unnecessary.
 We are 100% palm oil free. Look for palm oil, palmitate or simply "vegetable" oil on labels. Some things like glycerine can be derived from palm oil
without mentioning it on the label. We investigate our suppliers and
their ingredients before purchasing.

Five Key Points of Difference about TSB:
1) 100% Natural Preservative System: Most natural product ranges are considered to have a short shelf
life without the use of synthetic stabilisers and preservatives (which have
been shown to harm health). TSB guarantees 18 months shelf life from packaging
date by combining the following formulation principles:
- Antioxidants preserve oil
phase/components from rancidity and instability (generation of free radicals).
These include:
- Vitamin
A (beta-carotene from certified organic carrot root oil), vitamin C (ascorbic
acid and citrus seed extract), vitamin E (natural tocopherol derived from
wheatgerm oil), zinc (from pumpkin seed oil), certified organic green tea,
rosemary and ginkgo biloba extract.
- Antimicrobials prevent the
growth of bacteria, mould and fungus, primarily attracted to the water
phase/component of the product. These include:Certified
organic olive leaf, echinacea, citrus seed extract; naticide (almond extract in
Refining Mist and Cleansing Mask), colloidal silver, essential oils including a
tea tree/lemon preservative mix (not listed in ingredients due to very low
concentration – and lack of space on already crowded label!)
- Certified organic manuka honey in all emulsions contributes potent antibacterial properties
- Packaging minimises
opportunity for oxygen and microorganisms to spoil product – all emulsions are
in pump packs rather than open jars (which are vulnerable to oxidising and
bacteria from fingers).
The last
component of TSB’s natural preservative system is also the next unique point of
difference:
2) TSB Contain no water. Most moisturisers and emulsions
contain 75-90% water, partly because it is a moisturiser’s job to deliver
hydration to the skin and partly because this is a very cheap ingredient!
Instead
we use certified organic lavender distillate (hydrosol) which is highly
soothing, suitable for all skin types, naturally antibacterial and counters the
need for stronger preservatives to stop the growth of microorganisms in
oil-in-water emulsons (products with a higher water-to-oil ratio). Certified
organic lavender hydrosol makes up 100% of the water phase of TSB moisturisers
(apart from Rosehip Eye Balm which uses the super expensive certified organic
damask rosewater instead).
3) TSB does not use detergent cleansers - even the touted mild ones such as polyglucose. The surfactant
(active cleansing agent) in all TSB cleansers, including shampoos, is certified
organic liquid castile
(a liquid potassium soap of olive and coconut oils, labelled as saponified
olive and coconut oils).
Detergents
are extremely effective dissolvers of grease which were invented for industrial
use. The sulfates (think SLS) have received the worst reputation in skin care
and shampoos to date. Detergents are powerful enough to dissolve the lipids in
our cell membranes which also stick our epidermal cells together and form the
water-proof barrier that protects us from becoming soggy sponges in damp
conditions and dried prunes in dry conditions, amongst other essential
physiological purposes. Gradual destruction and drying of the skin results from
repeated or prolonged use of detergent cleansers (just think of your hands
after washing up without gloves for too long – first they wrinkle up, then the
skin starts to fray and peel).
Castile is a very traditional gentle soap cleanser originating from the Castile region
of Spain
where olives have been grown for centuries. Castile is effective at dissolving
surface dirt and oil but is not powerful enough to dissolve the lipids in your
skin. This enables the protective acid mantle and beneficial infection-fighting
microbes to return rapidly after cleansing.
4) The unique combination of certified organic herbal
extracts in TSB products performs multiple roles:
- Antioxidant and antimicrobial herbs preserve the product and counteract oxidative skin damage (ageing)
and skin infections such as acne and fungal overgrowth like candida (olive
leaf, echinacea, citrus seed, rosemary, green tea)
- Emollient herbs sooth the
skin via mucilage (jelly-like) production (marshmallow, aloe vera, slippery
elm, oats)
- Anti-inflammatory herbs soothe the body’s hypersensitive immune response that causes inflammation
(chamomile, calendula)
- Cell repairing and renewing herbs help to heal damaged skin from UV, scarring, wounds, drugs and
poisons (gotu kola, horsetail, ginseng, comfrey, aloe vera, pomegranate)

following in various products:

used for healing disturbances of the mucous membrane, internally and externally
(skin)

– for cleansing, of course!
- Mulla
mulla – for protection from UV radiation and EMR
- Five

A final
point about all this: why keep repeating “certified
organic” and what is the point anyway? Yes, there are many brands throwing
the organic buzzword around now and it is easy to become complacent about it.
However, there is a world of difference between using the word organic in a
product title or description and including perhaps 1% organic content
(sometimes nil) and the integrity needed to use a majority of agriculturally
certified organic ingredients, which are vastly more expensive and less
polluting to both the environment and our bodies and hence promote very real
sustainability. This is an issue which does NOT deserve our complacency. Inform
your friends and customers and be passionate about the huge potential of the
organics industry. Look for products which clearly indicate which ingredients
and what percentage are certified organic (as TSB does) or are entirely certified
(requiring 95% certified organic content excluding water )– but be wary, if 90%
of the product is water, only 5% of the entire product need be of
agriculturally certified organic origin to gain certified organic status – look
for substance in the ingredients.
